Those that you may encounter with ring wear can often be confirmed by removing the oil filler cap (at valve cover) and verified by blow-by (oily puffs of smoke). Typically indicates significant ring wear and may need the upper end rebuilt. At that temperature, if it smokes in between, at idle or during the throttle ranges to full, it's Not OK. ![]() And, once it's up to normal operating temperature and it smokes momentarily under full throttle, that's OK too. ![]() Their cooling and hydraulic systems generally require yearly changes, but I have heard some owners neglect or ignoring them for much longer.Īs with most, small Japanese built diesels if it smokes (dark gray exhaust) momentarily on start up, it's OK. Routine oil changes, air filter and fuel filter replacements are usually all that's required. The Kubota and John Deere GT's go well over 3K hours if the simplest of maintenance is performed. I'll toss out what little I know and speak in general terms about 3 cylinder diesel powered garden tractors.
